Meet The Candidates In Delaware

Be sure to meet this year's General Election Candidates before the vote on November 2!

Coffee with Fred Cullis @ Cullis HQWith the election less than three weeks away, now is an excellent time to take the chance to get out and meet the candidates.  In Delaware, we have the unique advantage of being a small state in which we actually do have the chance to see, meet, and talk to most of our candidates up close and personally.

Locally, in addition to the candidate forums, fundraisers, and debates, two candidates are holding coffees.  Fred Cullis is holding a Saturday morning coffee every Saturday at his campaign headquarters in Elsmere from 8:00-10:00.  Greg Lavelle has been holding coffees every first and third Tuesday morning at in Fairfax for several years.  There are still chances to meet both candidates before the election.

In addition, the Greater Hockessin Area Development Association is holding a Candidate Forum this Monday, October 18 at 5:30, focusing on State and local candidates.  The forum will be held at the Hockessin Fire Co's Memorial Hall.

Hockessin Memorial Hall DEThe Candidate Forum schedule includes:
- 5:30-6:00    NCC County Sheriff Candidates
- 6:00-6:45    State Auditor & Treasurer Candidates
- 6:45-7:30    NCC Council Candidates for District #3
- 7:30-8:15    State Representative Candidates for Districts #20 & 22
- 8:15-9:00    State Senate Candidates for District #7 & 8

There are a wide variety of additional fundraisers, community meetings, updates, and forums scheduled throughout the area before the election.  All the candidates look forward to the opportunity of meeting with their neighbors and hearing their views.  The more they hear and understand the issues, the better and more effective they can be in their new positions.  Take advantage of the opportunity to be heard!

This is an key election at both the State and National level with very clear differences among the candidates.  It is important that every voter take the time to be well informed and vote!

One Week Till The Delaware Primary - Still Time to Vote Absentee

You still have time to vote with an absentee ballot if you will not be able to visit your normal polling place for the Delaware Primary next Tuesday September 14.

Caesar Rodney Wilmington DEWell, we are now one week away from the Delaware Primary with interesting races scattered throughout the state for both Democrats and Republicans.  If you will be unable to vote at your normal polling place next week, you can vote absentee by mail or by visiting your County Department of Elections office (downtown Wilmington in New Castle County) until noon on Monday.  To vote absentee you must fall into one of several categories:

- Nature of your work prevents you from going.
- Your public service to the US or State of Delaware prevents you from voting.
- Your religion prevents you from going.
- You will be on vacation out of the area.
- You have been ill and will be unable to visit.
- You have a disability.
- You are incarcerated.

Be careful to follow all the directions so that your ballot is not disqualified.

2010 Vote DelawareOn the Republican side, the Primary races include the statewide positions for US Senator and US Representative in Congress along with various county and local races including the New Castle County Sheriff.  On the Democratic side, the Primary races include the statewide positions for State Treasurer and Auditor of Accounts as well as several county and local positions again including the New Castle County Sheriff.

Put aside some time and be sure to vote on September 14th - in person or by absentee ballot - but be sure to make your vote count!

Delaware Primary Candidates Debate in Hockessin DE

Last night I had the chance to attend some primary debates in Delaware hosted by the Community Newspaper and Greater Hockessin Area Development Association at the Hockessin Fire Hall.  DE Primary Debates Hockesin Fire HallNow that we are heavily into the political season with the Delaware primary only two weeks away, I thought it might be good time to take a look at the early issues. (Warning to those looking for real estate: this is mostly politics and personal observations)

In the first panel, 3 of the 5 primary candidates were in attendance running for the US Senate and US Congress on the Republican side.  Michael Castle (R) and Rose Izzo (R) were not in attendance.  Christine O'Donnell (R) did a great job highlighting some key concerns with the absent Congressman.  Sherriff Candidates O'Leary Hart NavarroWhile Michele Rollins (R) and Glen Urquhart (R) both had generally aligned views, Michele appeared the more forceful advocate for her positions.  Some interesting proposals on immigration were addressed.

Only 2 of the 4 Auditor of Accounts and State Treasurer candidates were available. Kenneth Matlusky (D) was present for the Auditors while Korn sent a representative. Chip Flowers (D) revealed a good grasp for the issues and positions while Velda Jones-Potter was apparently at another meeting.

The 2 local County Council 3 candidates were both available.  Building on her previous years of experience, Janet Kilpatrick (R) demonstrated deep expertise in the local issues and processes.  Chip Flowers State Treasurer CandidateMichael Protack (R) continued with a strong performance building on his deep links in the community.

The final group consisted of all four candidates for Sheriff and was probably the most intriguing of the night.  Michael Walsh (D) highlighted his years of experience in the position, his budget surplus, and the latest technological advances in his organization.  Trinidad Navarro (D), William Hart (R), and Joseph O'Leary (R) all emphasized increased access, possible technological advances, and customer service.  An interesting item was the handling of foreclosures.

Working in both New Castle County and Delaware County PA, the focus concerning Sheriff Sales of the two present Sheriffs could not be more different.  Sheriff Joseph McGinn of Delaware County PA has made it a priority of his organization to work with the residents in his area to avoid foreclosure.  Candidate FlyersHis office will provide information on the foreclosure process and contacts that any homeowner can use to try to work out of their problem to avoid a sale.  This includes an offer to act as a conduit between the homeowner and lender to ensure the process is moving further.

The current New Castle County Sheriff's Office has a different view and sees no responsibility to help the homeowner.  They are focused on the process and have been able to efficiently handle a quadrupling of their workload without adding any staff, while working efficiently with area attorneys, and creating a budget surplus.  They have been able to continue to excel at their core functions of Service of Process, Auctions, and Prisoner Detention and Transportation.

Janet Kilpatrick Mike Protack County Council 3

All three challengers seem to be moving toward a more balanced approach.
